Tuesday 25th February 2025
I had more observation of English in lessons today, including another Buddhism lesson and a Science Lesson. I also taught Maths again - odd and even numbers with another Grade 2 class (Year 3 in the UK). As with yesterday's Maths work on paired numbers (working out X + 12 = 25, 11 + X = 18 etc.), the learning of Maths is a cumulative process, so knowing about odd and even numbers will lead on to much more complex Maths work as they get older.
Although I said yesterday that X+12=25 is basic algebra (which it is, of course), we didn't actually ask them to find X, but gave them an empty box instead, as it was all about understanding how you can work out X+12=25 by taking the 12 away from the 25. Prior to this, of course, they had looked at number pairs to 10, with an understanding that 1+9=10, but that 9+1=10 as well. So, the progression yesterday was to look at 2-digit numbers, which they managed very well, I thought.
There was a buzz around the RIS this evening. I saw young children in the pool, lively boys playing volleyball and basketball, and there were also two big events happening. The first one was a Maths 'party' for Year 10 and Year 11 students. This involved Maths competitions, and the setting up of a campfire and lots of impromptu singing around it, which appeared to be a lot of fun, although that one ended relatively early - not long after 20:00.
The second event was the launch of The Astronomical Society of Royal International School, which is open to students from Grades 7 upwards. They had a celebratory event, with various things happening, including more than 100 students, staff and parents staying overnight at the school, with a guarantee that they wouldn't be getting a great deal of sleep, although they knew that wasn't going to be a problem, as there is no school tomorrow due to yet another Public Holiday.
Today's photos are all taken this evening, with the last 4 showing you the little programme that The Astronomical Society produced for their launch event. I've even managed a little video of the Maths students singing near the fire!
Gosh - the sky is certainly the limit for these young students!
