Sunday 9th February 2025
It started off as another fairly lazy weekend day, and the intention was to use a lot of it to catch up with a fairly substantial pile of outstanding Tea Leaf paperwork. I am fortunate here in Kurunegala that my 'work' generates extremely little additional paperwork, so although I have full-on days, once they are over, they really are over, apart from wanting to download photographs, complete this daily blog, and get my daily diary done, which are priorities for me.
Unfortunately for me, I have had serious issues with my laptop, as the camera is broken on it (fairly minor), but the charger port is beginning to fail (absolutely major), and it will give up completely within a day or two (I have already had it replaced once before I came out to Sri Lanka). I have had to bite the bullet, and order a new laptop through the school, as I will at least get it a little bit cheaper. Adding to that today, there was a nationwide power cut from 11:00 until 17:00.
When the power went off at 11:00, I had no idea how long it would last for, so I waited for a while, then cut my losses and went out for an early lunch at Olu, which is when I found out that they had no electricity either, and that the whole of Sri Lanka was enduring this power cut. You may even have heard about the power cut, as it made the international news (see the link below). It appears that a 'rogue' monkey managed to turn off the power in the whole of Sri Lanka just by itself!
Whilst at Olu, I received a message from Sandra inviting me to spend the afternoon with her, and Rohan, one of her drivers, picked me up at 14:00. We went to Selyn, where I looked round the shop, then had tea and buns with Sandra's brother, Hilary, and his wife Seemanthani. We then drove out into the country to visit a potter, which was the highlight of the day for me, as his craftsmanship was simply outstanding, and I bought a lovely wedding present for my trip tomorrow there.
After the 'rogue' monkey link, today's photographs are all from the delightful afternoon visit to see a master craftsman, whose pottery was just awe-inspiring.

This rogue cut must have reminded Sri Lankans of the daily power cuts experienced during Covid.
