Saturday 2nd November 2024

Well, what a wonderful day this turned out to be! We were due to set off for Colombo at 08:00, but it was actually closer to 08:30, which was nice really. It was a longer journey than expected, but we eventually arrived at the Good Market around 11:00, which was lovely, as we had gone there briefly on the Saturday that we arrived in Sri Lanka, but this time we were able to have a good look round the various stalls and do a bit of shopping.

I had a huge surprise at one point, as I bumped into Jit Seneviratne who, of thousands of people in Colombo, just happened to be at the Good Market with his wife, Udeni, and daughter, Aleyha, at exactly the same time as me, which was some coincidence! I have known Jit for the past 5 years, as a member of Colombo West Rotary Club, which was the fundholding Rotary Club for our Rotary International Project, and is currently helping with another Global Grant application.

We went back to Sandra's daughter Selyna's house after our time at the Good Market. Jan had travelled with us from Kurunegala, as she flies back to Australia this evening. We had a rest at Selyna's, then Sandra took us all out for a treat - and what an amazing treat it was. We were taken to Galle Face Hotel for High Tea. Galle Face dates back to 1864 and, as the first hotel of its type built in Colombo, is extremely impressive and luxurious.

We had an amazing High Tea looking out over the Indian Ocean, with Sandra's son, Ravi, joining us, and it was a most special occasion that will live on in our memories for some time. It was capped at sunset with a bagpiper accompanying one of the Hotel Managers to ceremonially take down the Sri Lankan flag, which was rather beautiful. I'm not sure what we've done to receive such special treatment, but we are both extremely grateful to Sandra for her kindness to us.

Today's photographs show my amazing coincidental meeting with Jit Seneviratne at the Good Market, then the fabulous High Tea at Galle Face Hotel.

  1. Lovely coincidence at the market, and what a place to go to for a high tea (with cuppa)!
