Today was the day that power cuts really messed things up. Yad wanted me to edit some KNH 'Interesting Stories' today, which Aruni, who is now in charge of the KNH team, sending me them through Google Drive, where you can edit them online. All was going well until around 11:30 when there was a power cut, which I stuck out until nearly 13:00 but then decided to escape by going to The Grand Hotel.
One of the good things I noticed last time with The Grand Hotel, which was just one of the reasons to spend so much time there, was that it has its own generator, so it isn't affected by power cuts. This, of course, is a huge asset when you are trying to do things that can only be done online, but it is also a great excuse to go and work in what just happens to be a beautiful environment, with extremely friendly staff.
You couldn't afford to stay at The Grand Hotel for any length of time (well I certainly couldn't afford it!), but when it comes to food and drink, it offers a very varied menu at very affordable prices, so you could quite happily 'live' there, as long as you don't stay there overnight. I only had a light, late lunch there before plodding on with my work for Yad, but it was certainly a most enjoyable way to spend the afternoon.
I returned just after 17:00 by tuk-tuk to find that the power cut that had started at 11:30 had continued all day, which had been immensely frustrating for Yad, as even if you can work offline, you only have so much time on a laptop before it needs to be recharged. previous days so far have seen regular, but reasonably short power cuts, so I do hope today's fiasco was a one-off, as it must be immensely frustrating for people out here.
Today's photos have a horse theme, as I saw one when I arrived at The Grand Hotel, and then walked past the racecourse on my way home. Apparently there are races this Sunday 15th January, so I may be tempted to go along if nothing else comes up, just for the experience. There is one final photo of a view taken from the tuk-tuk on my way back to Blackpool, which is nice, but doesn't really seem to do justice to what is a wonderful view.
Hi Keith
ReplyDeleteGood to catch up with your blogs again. Seems like only yesterday that we were reading the previous ones. Judging from your photos, the weather in Nuwara Eliya seems unusually benign at the moment, long may it last. I will be booking our flights this weekend, once that is done I'll make contact to see how we can catch up in the short window in which we overlap. Please give my good wishes to the staff at TLT.
