Saturday 21st January 2023

It was a miserable day today weather-wise, and a shocking, major accident, with a number of fatalities, on the Nanu Oya road resulted in a change of plans. Vino was supposed to be coming with a colleague to work with Yad, and I was supposed to be helping them, but they could not travel here, as the road was closed for hours because of a very detailed police investigation into the accident, which was quite horrific.

I hung around all morning until 12:00, and was just about to set off into Nuwara Eliya, when Jana appeared with some roti and dahl - not sure if it was late breakfast or early lunch - but I stopped to eat that before getting a tuk-tuk into town, which had to take me a way I had never been before because of the road closure. We drove up past some cows on the road near their farm, and then came down again to meet another main road into town.

I just relaxed at The Grand Hotel, as I still have intermittent bouts of dreadful coughing. However, I finished my course of medicine today, and I am feeling so much better now each day, so I am expecting to be back to normal by Sunday. The terrible accident was the talk of the hotel, as one of the guys I am very good friends with there had been very emotionally affected by it, although I couldn't chat to him, as he had to go off sick!

I have almost finished this blog and guess what - there's a power cut! Fortunately, I will be able to copy and paste what I have written, and then complete it when the power comes back on in an hour or so. I know gas and electricity prices in the UK are bonkers at the moment but do be grateful that you have electricity all day long, as it is pretty annoying when you have to suffer these daily power cuts!

Today's photos, which I will now have to upload later, were taken early this evening at The Grand Hotel, and include a lovely one of Mr. Kumar, who has been the concierge there for more than 20 years!

  1. Good to hear you are getting back to normal health, Keith. What a beautiful place of refuge the Grand Hotel is. Yesterday I learnt that the son of a friend and his partner are taking a holiday in Sri Lanka soon - does this mean the local tourist industry is getting back on its feet, I wonder?

  2. Morning Keith, similarly glad to hear you're getting better. Lots of people over here, including me, have coughs that seem to be lingering on and on. The weather here has changed from rain to ice. It's a form of winter I prefer, cold and sunny as opposed to warm and wet. I can walk the dogs and we don't come back caked in mud. I had a small part in a problem a friend of mine had over the weekend as you may have seen from the email I sent all members yesterday. I've been in touch with him today and he's had thousands of messages of support so is feeling a lot better. Take care, Adrian
