Wednesday 1st June 2022
Today was 1st June, and the first day of a new month brought another new experience for me! My good friend Daya had appendicitis and went into hospital first thing on Monday morning for tests, with his operation then being carried out on Tuesday. I offered to visit him in hospital today, taking some food and other items that he might need, so I went off after breakfast this morning to do some shopping!
There were no buses at all today, so I was forced to take a tuk-tuk to Glencairn Hospital, and I was pleased that Pradeep, my regular tuk-tuk driver in Maskeliya was available. It was absolutely tipping it down, so he picked me up from the shop where I was getting the necessary provisions, and then drove me to the hospital, where Daya's 'sister' gave me the pass I needed to get into the hospital to visit him!
Daya is the eldest of 3 boys, so he has no sisters, which I pointed out to him when he first mentioned having 3 sisters, but Sri Lankans seem to use the term 'brother' and 'sister' very loosely for any close relative, and this 'sister' is in fact his cousin! As you will see from the photo, I found Daya looking very well - in some discomfort, obviously - but in pretty good spirits under the circumstances.
The visiting hour was from 12:00-13:00, so the time went quickly, as his 'sister' was visiting too, and you are only allowed one visitor at a time. I was lucky to meet the doctor who operated on Daya, and he was a very amiable chap, who told us that Daya could start eating properly now, and that he was likely to be discharged tomorrow. I am hoping to then visit Daya at home on Saturday or Sunday.
How good you were able to provide Data with some food for the rest of his stay in hospital. The building looks quite modern. Did you get any idea that medicines might be in short supply?
