The Sri Lankan news this morning told a grim tale of no petrol, no diesel, and no gas, but school still opened somehow, with a good number of the students getting in. I had the keys, so I was there early to open the school, and I checked to see if the puppies were still around - and they were - looking fairly well - although there was still no sign of the mother - so I am not sure how this story is going to end!

It was nice enough weather-wise for the students to gather for an 'assembly', where they were addressed by Ms. Subagaran, who gave out notices, and recognised 4 students for their excellent contributions to the life of the school. Sri Lankan ladies do look lovely in their saris, so I took a picture of Ms. Manoharan, who was wearing a particularly beautiful new one today that all the ladies were admiring.

I updated my Visits to Government Schools Report today, and I also edited a Hydroponics Business Plan that Donald had sent me. In these difficult times, although Donald and Ladushan's business 'GROW' is achieving some success, they feel the need to diversify, so that if times are lean for one aspect of their business, they might be going better in another aspect - it makes a lot of sense to me!

We had jackfruit at dinner this evening - a fairly common occurrence, as apparently it is the national fruit of Sri Lanka and grows everywhere - so I thought I would show you a picture of what it looks like growing - an extremely large, very odd-looking 'fruit', which is more like a vegetable if you eat it before it is ripe, and I think rather bland on its own, but very tasty when it is cooked with various spices.

  1. I like the juxtaposition between the beauty of the puppies, saris and jackfruits (animal, human and vegetable). Glad to hear that school was able to convene inspire of all that currently conspires against it.

  2. Just caught up with a week’s worth of blogs. Despite all the problems you seem to be achieving a great deal. Well done! I read this morning that fuel prices are going up again, if you can get hold of any. This was closely followed by bus fare increases which is really going to hit people hard.
