It was so lovely to wake up to glorious sunshine today and beautiful
views of the Indian Ocean. We strolled along the ocean road until we found a
tiny little place to have some tea and then, on our way back, we found another
little place to have a bite to eat for breakfast. We then took a tuk-tuk to the
Kalmunai Youth Reconciliation Centre. I observed Mahesh, who is in his first year of teaching, taking an
English lesson with a very small class of only 9 students – all lads! He
demonstrated many very positive qualities, but there were also a few key areas
where he could develop his teaching. I am primarily here to support Daya with
his important role as Regional Co-ordinator for Sri Lanka Unites, so he
observed the lesson with me and then observed me giving feedback to Mahesh.
My walk with Daya along the beach was certainly the highlight of the day for me,
as it was just so relaxing walking along by the Indian Ocean. It was too dangerous to swim, as the sea was very
rough and we were concerned about the undertow, but it was still lovely to
paddle in the shallow water, which was so warm. We enjoyed watching lots of sand
bubbler crabs scuttle back to their burrows, which they did at an incredible
speed. You needed to look further ahead up the beach to spot them, because they
could sense your approach in the sand, so any that were near you had scuttled
away before you could spot them.
Today's photos show Daya on our early morning stroll this morning, plus a bunch of goats that were also by the coastal road. There is also a photograph of the Kalumnai Youth Reconciliation Centre, which is conveniently situated above a very dusty cement distribution centre! The final two photographs are of a group of cows we met sunbathing by some boats on the beach and a group of lads who stopped to chat to us on the beach today!
