Sunday 22nd September 2019

I slept in a bit today and when I woke up it was a beautiful morning. However, by the time I had had a shower, made some breakfast and caught up on some emails, it was raining quite hard. I stayed at home for a bit longer, but it was obvious that the rain wasn't going to clear and I was determined not to stay in all day, so I ventured out in the rain in my wet weather gear and it just poured down all day!

I spent quite a long time familiarising myself with Nuwara Eliya. Two girls running some sort of sweet shop chatted to me and I got them to take my photo and I took a lovely photo of them (see below). I know I look like a massive blue whale in my wet weather gear, so there is no need to comment!

I cannot believe coincidences sometimes. I was looking round the little stores in the upstairs shopping area in the centre and who should I find having his hair cut but Musthaq, one of the teachers from school! Not only that, but the barber introduced himself to me as Kanna and told me that he also cuts Mr. Pare's hair when he is in town! I told him if he's good enough for Mr. Pare, then he's good enough for me and that I would definitely be back, but that my hair would have to grow a bit first!

Even with all my wet weather gear, I got so wet that I couldn't bear any more traipsing around, so I went to The Grand Hotel for a lovely hot cup of cinnamon chai in the Tea Lounge - it was delicious. I went to have a look at the Bar (just a look, of course), but as I passed through the Octagonal Piano Lounge, the England versus Tonga rugby game was showing, so, of course, I settled down in that beautiful room and watched the game (with a little bit of light refreshment)! England won 35-3!

I stopped off for something to eat on my way home and had a fabulous spicy Sri Lankan dish called a a Chicken Kotthu (with Ed Sheeran's 'I'm in love with the shape of you' playing in the background). It must be a favourite here, because Rachelle and I heard it last night when we went to The Grand Hotel Indian Restaurant! You hear pop music from the UK the world over, so I guess it was no surprise! It was a delicious meal to round off a lovely first weekend here in Nuwara Eliya!
